Video sound recording

Hey Guys,

I have started to video tape some of our MINI runs, however i would like to record the engine/exhaust sounds instead of what is going on in the cabin. You can hear some of the engine but when I'm playing music it overpowers the engine sound.

So I'm hoping some one can help out....

1. Where should an external mic go as best to pick up some engine/exhaust notes and not have too much wind or road noise??

2. Any suggestions on a certain type of mic.

Thanks in advance

Rub

Recording the intake sounds is pretty impressive. Just place the lav mic under the bonnet, near the intake, and route the wiring to inside your car. You can run the lav wiring along the body panel seam near the side marker--through the door jamb.

If you record the audio properly, you can mix the intake with ambient--passenger cabin sounds for proper effect.

Here's an example

You need a lav mic from Radio Shack, a preamp to make the mic level into line level.

Excellent. Just remember mic placement is crucial. In my early audio tests, I didn't place it near my intake--actually I also still had the OEM intake--now that I've got an aftermarket one, it really growls.

If you put the mic near a shock tower, like I did the first time, you will hear all the belts and motor noises and clicks and things that are not very characteristically a MINI. That is, it IS truly what's going on, but you just don't hear those noises from outside, and it's very weird hearing them.

That said, I route the mic from the driver side door to the body seam to the bonnet. If you do it from the passenger side, it won't be long enough to reach the intake.

Good luck!
