I know people have wanted this but I just don't see how useful it is. It's still pretty cool though.

It's useful if you're trying of offload your memory cards and keep shooting.

For instance, on a trip, I may want to shoot RAW on a 1 gig memory card. I could take 90+ photos on the card then dump those to the ipod.

Here's the problem with it though

The photo ipod doesn't come with any means for transfering directly from compact flash to ipod. You have to spend another $100 for the media transfer accessory to do that.

So out of the box, the only thing the ipod photo does is allow you to transfer photos from your computer to your ipod. It becomes much more functional once the media transfer is enabled.

For me, it makes some sense to just dump gigs of photos onto the ipod. I don't need anything larger than a 1 gig card if I can effectively offload that card and keep shooting/dumping.

Yeah, and with the $100 Belkin reader, you can already dump pics and keep shooting...although you can't view them.

or you can get the iRiver H320 at 320.00

your can browse digital photos in .jpg format.
(i love this feature because its a lot easier than turning on your compter to share digital photos, especially if your not home

you can also read .txt text files (handy for driving directions or contact info)

in addition it has a line in, unlike the ipod

two balanced stereo outputs

when pluged into your PC or MAC it is a folder stucture and read like a hard drive. where the ipod makes youorganize everything by perfect ID tags.
you can also sync the i River to winamp, media player, musicmatch, etc. if you like you ID tags.

the button interface is easy to use..... its quite quick and responsive.

they will be making a 40G version also.

it has a redordable FM tuner

it has upgradeable firmware so i wouldnt be suprized if they design a plug in for .mpeg viewing.

no i dont work for them.... i just hate the ipod.

i have one and i love it.

they just came out.

I agree, that thing is neat. Some people like Apple hardware though, and some people would say that the iRiver thing just does way too much for what they want.

Why do you hate the iPod?

sorry to jack your post antsmini.

i just want everyone informed of the alternatives...

there are aspects of the ipod i do indeed like

i like its size and the way it looks as well as its speedy interface.

i also like the fact that it has so many cool accesories and the fact you can sync it to the MINI.

my stereo has a 1/8"stereo input on the front of it so im set.

i dont like the price or the anti-versatility of ipod.

and i dont like the fact that you have to format it just to switch from PC to MAC

also rather than a simple folder structure that you can control completely, you must have perfect ID tags for every song uploaded.

its cool, just not for me....

The thing about the iPOD is that its harddrive based and it doesnt really have the power for writing to it when its not plugged in to the firewire port so the battery life SUCKS when you're trying to write to it with the belkin thing.

That said I love my iPOD.

The photo ipod is not that exciting to me, but I like the look of the U2 black and red ipod.

The only thing about it that interests me is the ability to display the cover art of the music I am listening to. But it isn't worth $500 to me.
