Any guesses why Canon is doing this when the D70 is still $300 more?
The theories I came up with:
- Maybe they have another rabbit to pull out of the hat between the Digital Rebel and the new 20D?
- With the 20D on the market now the price pressure on the 10D has driven that down to the $1100 to $1200 range, so the Digital Rebel needed a price break?
Also, the Digital Rebel is going to have a limited number of all black camera bodies coming out.
I wouldn't be suprised if Canon dropped another camera out between the 20D and the 300D, right in the price range of the D70 kit.
Either that or they're trying to snatch up a larger portion of the high end PNS market (which the D70 really doesn't infringe on much at $1300) and reap the benefits on lens and accessory purchases.
And wow... I didn't have any idea 300Ds were getting THIS cheap! $780 after rebate for the body and lens!
I've heard the KISS (Japanese Rebel/300D) is all black and has the USM lens! The camera has been out a while and in it a class by itself but it has some new competition arriving shortly (E-Volt & ist-DS). Maybe they're just trying to capture a bit more market share while they can.
A person I work with got a new, Grey market (Import) 300D Kit, yes with the 18-55 lens, for $395 after the $100 rebate from www.amphotoworld.com. Since then the price has gone back up to $609, $509 after the rebate.
They currently have the US Retail version of the Canon 20D (Body Only) for $1,099. I just spoke with a sales rep there two hours ago.
I plan on getting my 20D and 24-70mm f/2.8L Wide Angle-Telephoto EF USM in April.
A&M's shipping costs aren't cheap, well maybe by government standards they are, but I have found a way to get around them. Can I say I am a penny pincher. If you go through the process of putting all of your information in and putting the items in your shopping cart. It will ask you to submit your order for you to see your shipping costs, it doesn't finalize the order, and then go back and remove your items from the shopping cart, they will send you an email for you to finalize your order with a special code to receive FREE SHIPPING. I have got it to work three orut of four times.
