what oil to use?

I am about to do my first oil change out of warrenty. I would like to know what kind of oil to you guys use when going to the local auto parts store to pick it up. It is finally starting to get warmer here and going to do it myself rather then paying the dealer a ton of money. please help me out guys.

Royal Purple 5W-30 for me.

some use Mobil One, Redline is also popular, the dealer and factory use Castrol. Make sure you get the FULL synthetic though.

This one has been beat to death. You may want to do a search.

Redline 5w30 is top of the line IMHO. I will not use Castrol as it is not a true full syn. MUCH info to be had if you search

Depending on your location, you might not find any redline or royal purple at your local store..
just go for mobile 1 synthetic.

If you are a member Costco seems to carry the correct Mobil 1 for a good price (each warehouse can be different though).

$20 for 5 quarts, availible at some Costco locations and Wal-Marts, should be able to find it at an Autozine or similar.

Redline 5w30

Under $8/quart here. Plenty of other retailers. Get a case, as you will use 10 quarts over 2 changes.

http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/redline1.htm

Also can get from summit which is a very reputable place:

Does K&N make an oil filter for the Mini? Don't suppose you have a link or the part number?
Thanks for any pointers.... I searched the K&N site, but found nothing for an oil filter.

Cheers,
Lloyd

My advise: stick with OEM BMWAG filters. www.myminiparts.com has them for a good price.

You are correct - it's hard to beat that price. Just ordered 3 so I'm ahead of the game next change.

Thanks,
Lloyd

Actually, this topic has been debated many times over the years. Back when I ran a Nissan SR20 motor this was a big issue b/c Nissan also recommended Syntec at the time. If I recall correctly there was even some legal action taken against Castrol. The thing is, Syntec "full synthetic" is/was actually re-engineered regular oil. The scientists at Castrol had manipulated the molecular structure of regular oil, added some things to it, and marketed as a full-syn. Many people/competitors felt that this was misleading and false.

Hmmm....
I've worked at Nissan dealers since 1978, and can't remember Nissan (the parent company) ever recommending any brand of oil over another. Maybe it was a specific dealers recommendation.

Do some home work, you'll find that Castrol Syntec IS NOT a true syn oil. It just a hydrocracked dino oil with just enough additives to barely be listed as a syn oil.

Sorry, I guess I was blinded by the advertising. I use RedLine, anyway.
And I really don't care enough to do any "home work" about it.
