Just another reminder... being on the same channel will probably cause some cut-outs and interference when in the same area as another group on the same channel (even with a different subchannel).

That means that the Friday Devils Trangle Drive / Sat AutoX group... and Metroplex MINI, will probably have some interference/interruption with each other and also with the "main" 7/21 channel.

It also means that Upstateminis (South Carolina) and Mid-South MINIacs will experience some interference with each other too, since they are both using channel 17.

Subchannels are just "privacy codes", they do not give you a dedicated frequency! Only separate channels will do that.

I'd also like to add that because of congestion on the limited number of frequencies that we have, the radios should not be used for chatter if at all possible. Quick messages for information or clarification are ideal! This also has the added benefit of saving battery power

You want one that has subcodes, other than that, they all SUCK!

Do Not under any circumstances buy a radio based on the quoted distance!

I agree 100% ...
I bought an expensive set of Motorolas that stated a 26 mile distance.
Much to my surprise after I opened the box the literature on the inside
stated a 26 mile distance if one person is on a clear-cut mountain top
and the other is down below in the valley.
These radios operate on a line of site principal which means that on the
Dragon you will probably get about 1-2 miles at best if the moon is properly
lined up.

Moral of this story is to get yourself a good set with sub-frequencies for
about $25-35.

ALL FM radios are LOS (line-of-sight). Since Marconi, and the physics haven't changed. More power only means more LOS distance, they do not curve around mountains. FM can bounce/curve of the ionesphere, but our handhelds will not give much distance.

Still better than cell phones: you can warn others aproaching hazards, and you rarely get a busy signal! Be courteous, and wait a half-second after you push the PTT button so the radio can wind up!

+1. You're not gonna get more than 5 watt out of these radios, and the frequencies are located in the UHF range. UHF is unfortunately affected by just about everything you can think of. So yeah, you may even have a problem making it to the person at the front of the pack during a drive! That said, they are quite handy, and considering that cell phone reception is almost non-existent in the area, it's almost a necessity!

There shouldn't be too much of a problem with the Mid-South MINIacs. Sadly, our contingency is significantly smaller than in the previous years.
