Motorsport photography on the dragon

I had never heard of this until I went to this year's MotD event. Personally, I think that it's a great idea but the only one I remember the name of is killboy.com Do any of you remember the names of the other half dozen or so that were out there?

The following website Flickr is made up from photographs taken by MOTD participants and it's a great place to see more than just the Dragon pictures.
It is a community built by people like you and me where you can add your own pictures for everyone else to enjoy at no cost to anyone.
I hope that everyone that took pictures of anything relating to this years MOTD will take a moment to add a few pictures so that others may enjoy the memories.
And for those that were not able to attend or were unsure if they should, this is an excellent place to see what was going on at the Dragon and beyond the Dragon.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/motd2008/

Thank you to all that have contributed so far, your images have brought back a flood of memories.

I wholeheartedly support Killboy - he is the original, and the best, of all the photographers there (the best being my opinion of course).

Photos by the numbers:
us129photos- 8 pictures
Zeefoto- 7 pictures
Killboy- 4 pictures
Moonshinephoto- 2 pictures

Now this is a completely unbiased assessment (like the kind our children are required by the government to take each year) looking at one day and one run. We are not looking at quality only the quantity of pictures taken of my Mini. Your results may vary- but these results are the only important ones (to me).

I made 2 runs (the parade plus another later after the Brewery Run) but my totals were:
Killboy: 24 photos
Zeefoto: 16 photos
Moonshinephoto: 12 photos
US129 Photos: 10 photos

Finding mine (having a red convertible made it relatively fast) was easy, now the hard part- picking ONLY a few to buy!

wow...thats a lot of photos to choose from. we took 3 runs with ambrosia on friday, sat & sun...but only have about 4-5 photos each from killyboy, us129 & zeefoto. I'm pretty bummed out about that as I was hoping for some good shots with me driving but the few we have to choose from aren't even spectacular. I guess a SS R56 isn't great photo fodder

I'm also trying to determine WHO took a pic of me driving the dragon around 7pm on Saturday...I can't find the photo(s) anywhere But someone was out there and took my pic and I waved.

Did you look at some of the personal pictures that were taken? It may be there and the advantage is you can print them for free.
Try this one for starters Flickr Group - MOTD 2008 there are presently 693 photos from this years MOTD and you may find yourself in many of those pictures.
And if you have any pictures of your own you may want to add yours.

I've looked at all the various sites and they all have a bunch of pictures of my car, but I just wasn't impressed with any of them except killboy's. All the others seemed badly framed or focused or just plain boring. Moonshine had a fairly good one, but it was the only one. I think I'll be sticking with the original dragon photographer!

Thanks for the support and feedback! We had a good time shooting you all, and tried to mix it up and give ya something different.

Concerning quantities: I encourage my guys to avoid holding the button down, and work more on composition. These cameras will shoot 6.5 shots per second, and any amateur can hold the button down and follow the vehicle along the road. We try to frame up a nice shot, shoot, and frame up the next. Plus it keeps you from having to sift through a ridiculous number of shots and us from having to store said ridiculous amount. ;)

So thanks again...we're listenin'.

killboy, yours are the best composition-wise. The other folks just take still shots of the cars. You do neat pans and place the cars in with the rule of thirds photography style for the most part. (which is pretty much what Amy just said). I have one that you did a diagonal pan, one of the neatest shots I've seen you take of my car... gotta figure out where it is though!

I need to bribe you into making me a friend of the gap so i can find my shots easier, hehheh. Keep up the good work, I'll see you in October! (I'll be buying some shots here soon too, since my car has been de-stickered).

Yeah, Darryl and crew compose carefully and don't just machine gun everything. In a lot of ways, doing this sort of thing is surprisingly like landscape photography. You find a good background, compose, and wait for the cars. The composition isn't just the result of some random slice of time. He also always works on new ideas and thinks things through in terms of conveying the story of the event. Plus he's fun to hang with!

Very flattering coming from a fellow photog, thanks Mark. I passed all of this along to my partners. And we'll work on that "Friends" thing Sarcux. (Jeremy?)

My only hesitation ever from buying is that it's $6 for one pic on one CD. Now that is fine for one, but I want all from me and my friends and it is still $6 each..... No thank you.

Hey times are tough, they're tough for everyone, and we appreciate any business we get. We'll still love ya even if you can't get any shots, but here's some info to put it in perspective:

Most event photographers charge $40-$50 PER digital image. That's EACH! And they're usually unpublished photographers...we've been in dozens of magazines. We're so cheap, I think some folks take for granted what they're getting. We're standing out there with $10,000 worth of gear, every day of the week in heat/cold/sun/bugs watching everyone else have fun, shooting and storing indefinitely 20,000 to 40,000 photos a week. (we've got many TERABYTES of drives in racks plus off-site redundant backups) Then there's the individual sorting and categorizing of each photo...imagine flipping through 20,000 shots and verifying that each one is good, then putting each one into one of 10 categories...every week. Plus uploading time, and order fulfillment time and costs. I've actually had other photographers in other parts of the country contact me asking me to consider raising my prices because they are getting complaints and there is no way they can stay in business if they lower their prices.

I love what we do, and we have a great time overall doing it, but it's not as simple as you might think.

I agree with the above. Although I did purchase more photo's because I wanted them it would be nice if their was a price break for multiple photo's on the same disk.

I don't think it's bad for the following reasons:

1: Overhead. Darryl/Killboy has a number of people working for him, as well as running a shop across from deal's gap. They spend long days out there, in the rain, with expensive camera equipment.

2. Quality over quantity: Killboy shots are high quality (as discussed below), they actually pan and show movement of cars. Also, though they take pictures of every single car that they can (limited by human reflexes), probably only 5% of the people they shoot actually buy pictures.

I think $6 a shot is pretty reasonable. Darryl is not out there to rip anyone off - remember that this is how he makes his living - and he seems to do quite well doing it. This is also the reason why I will NEVER buy from the other photographers on the road; Darryl/Killboy is the original, and the best.

He also provides community service - he'll help escort trucks, assist with accidents, etc.

Call it "brand loyalty".

FWIW I haven't even considered buying "the other guys" photos. Killboy is IMO the best. Now all I need to do is narrow them down!

Daryl was also nice enough to schedule his team out 2 hours early to accomitate the parade and give us those nifty business cards with the maps on the back!
