soft paint

is it just me or do our minis have some really soft paint? i have a january build 04 (brg/w) and i can barely lean on her without scratching her. a less than smart friend of mine shoveled the snow off her this winter and i have these huge scrapes going up the front all along the "bumpy parts" (i.e. above the lights, down the middle). now of course shoveling leads to scratching but this was a plastic shovel that led to some pretty wicked scratches, right through the clear coat. by bumper's also scratched to hell and there are some scratches just to the right of the driver's side door.
what's the deal??? sure i've been doing some back and forth between maine and new york but the ammount of scratches on her (besides the hood) considering i've only had her one year are ridiculous... maybe i'm being silly but i'm anal retentive about my car, and have been about past ones and none have ever gotten like this. my last car, a dark green 96 a4 had NO SCRATCHES and he was 8 years old when i got rid of him! maybe the a4's paint was exceptional, i don't know, but my mini's driving me nuts.

almost makes me want to get another a4... (for the extra room, too... i'm not that superficial!)
any thoughts?
