I have zero-zilch-nadda knowledge of Cigars. I have a Interest in learning about them tho. Check that, I know Swisher-Sweets but I assume you would hardly call them cigars.

have you seen that absurd proposed bill that would tax tobacco something like 20,000% above present taxes? Am not a smoker, but think that is totally ridiculous
Yeah it would basicly be a $10 taxfor every $1 of the cigar, I think the Manufactures have to pay it also, I know crazy

...which is why the manufacturers and suppliers are urging their customers to write the President and their Congressmen to vote NO and to offer alternatives, if possible.

YES PLEASE!! I am an avid cigar smoker and not a true professional but, I am a self proclaimed cigar snob! I would love to smoke a good cigar while the rest swap beer. I do have a short and somewhat biased opinion of the "Cheap Store Cigars!" they have a place as long as they arent flavored. I got started on the Swisher-Sweets and still grab a bag of Backwoods if I am out and on a long road trip.
I will bring a few of my all time favorites and maybe we will get lucky and convert a few to the cigar family and MAYBE educate a few people who believe cigars and cigartettes are the same thing! hahaha!
Just tell me where and when and I am in!

So if went into a cigar shop, with no knowledge of cigars mind you, to get something for MITM what would be the best for beginners? and would you all be willing to teach novices about cigars?

Try the Cigars International Legends [www.cigarsinternational.com] "Copper" for a REALLY good Drew Estate cigar at a made to order proce of about $5.00. It is mild-to-medium, firm ash, good flavor, and measures 5.7" with a 54 ring. For a medium-to-full cigar, try one of the new version La Flor de Cano cigars, now being produced in Danli, Honduras. It's a maduro, medium to full, fine burn and draw, with the same smooth taste as its Cuban cousin.
Milder is better for a beginner. Maybe a Macanudo? Partagas is not overly strong, and quite good. If you can find one, Canaria D'oro is mild and tasty. (sorry, I switched from the mild ones a while back, so not much help there). A good tobacconist will be able to make a recomendation for you.
I know what I like, but am by no means an expert.
I will gladly pass along what I know, but don't expect miracles.
One thing I would suggest is not to get a skinny cigar. In my experience, the thin ones taste "hotter" (in a bad way). Try for something in a 45-or-larger ring gauge. The toro size is my favorite, 6x50 (6 inches long, 50 ring gauge). A good 1 hour smoke.
If the one you pick doesn't work for you, I'll have others.

Jpolsen - For me I would find a good cigar store and go in and talk to them. My milds may be more than a beginner would like but, here are a few Fonseca, Fuente Hemingway's, H. Upmann's and Punch Rare Corojo's or the Gran Puros. I am a Maduro fan, Dark and full bodied. With all cigars you need to let people know up front that you are a beginner and that you are looking for a light to mild. My fav's are Diamond Crown Maximus, Perdomo ESV and Edicion de Silvio, La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero (this one if you havent eaten will make you fall down! haha), Partagas Black Label, Opus X, Ashton VSG, Avo Maduro, and the milds listed above. I do agree with 3 cocinas about the size but I might even suggest smaller like the Robusto (4.5 inch x 50 ring gauge) for beginners, generally cheaper and not a huge loss if you dont like it - My opinion! Make sure its a CIGAR store and not a cigarette shop. Maybe try...

3 cocinas - I would love to have another Cohiba thank you! I smoked 2 from Cuba a friend brought back and they were delicious and had a good kick! (I hadn't eaten!) I still am a purist and wont smoke anything flavored but that is just the way I was turned! HAHA!
I am not by any stretch an expert either. I found a great cigar store and made friends and tried ALOT of cigars. I enjoy them and almost always enjoy the company of other cigar smokers. Cant wait to see you all in Colorado!

Did you read the CI review on the Copper Legend as well as its description? I never dreamed they would sell out so quickly. I had bought the humidor with the sampler inside...smoked them all and determined that, for me, my likes drifted towards the Copper, by Drew Estate and the Orange, by Rocky Patel. Go figure, as they produce some of my favorite cigars. I quickly ordered 5-packs of each went thru the Coppers like a wildfire. When I went to order a box, they were all sold out, so I put my name on the "send one whenever you get them in" list and received a box a week later. They have been backordered ever since. That was about 3 weeks ago, and I have 12 left and am getting worried.
I'm pretty sure you will not be able to find them elsewhere, as the Copper was created just for the CI "Legends" Series.

Just thought I'd bump this up as a reminder (or as 1st notice for those late to the party). I'm putting the finishing touches on my travel humidor inventory and will have many to chose from.
Let's meet up at the Brewswap and decide what to do from there. We can stay there, or have a brew-or-2, go to dinner, then come back for a smoke. I'm open to suggestions to make this as enjoyable as possible!

Since I'm on the other side of the country, I won't be coming to Copper ... but I love talk about cigars. When I first began smoking cigars, I asked the local tobacco store to "pick out 5 cigars but don't tell me how much each cost." That way, as a newbie, I wouldn't be influenced by the price. The one I most enjoyed was a $3.50 Montecino Diplomatico (made by the Fuente folks). Now, even though I smoke all sorts of Domincan (mostly) cigars, I always have Montecinos in the humidor.
