In the OBDII world, secondary air (aka the air pump) is an emissions system that injects clean air into the exhaust stream pre-cat to allow the unburnt exhaust gases to burn more completely. I don't believe this applies to the R56, and being that the code is in the manufacturer-specific code range (1000-1FFF) it will differ from other manufacturers code P1497.
Unfortunately it looks like you may have to take a trip to the dealer to get this resolved. You could try your luck at calling a Mini performance shop (like M7, Alta, or RMW) and see if they can look the code up on their diagnostic tool. Just a thought.
Good luck,
Jeff

We shall see.......
The techs did say they never see that code though

Turns out it's the code for an unmetered air leak. Which they tested for and didn't find. So no idea why it popped up!

My JCW was in for service 8/7/ 13 took it out for the day on 8/8 and by the end of the day had the yellow engine light up......put diagnostic tool on and got the P1497....By passed my catch can and restored to original and then noted oil on valve cover on rt side and a hair line crack as per other posting.
Could this be due to the hood scoop not cooling this area enough and causing that specific part to crack as it is the closest to the scoop that part of the valve cover.
I have just bought a scoop ($35 second hand) and a heat sink (in post) and feel both problems are due to lack of air flow and feel mini are resposible for this and I am sure original testing would have shown this ....looks like I am in for a new valve cover and gasket.......pissed off Nigel the Brit!

Hello Forum:
This is related to CEL P1497. It was a vacuum leak, which I fixed. The Mini is fine now; but, I cannot clear the code without proper tool. My car is up for smog check in a month. Do I need to have the code clear in order to pass smog? Any recommendation where I can have it clear in San Diego beside going to dealers is much appreciated.
Thank you.

This error code was displayed on my JCW and once fixed I still had the error code and asked the dealer why I was not able to clear it,they said you have to drive the car and it will clear itself in time providing the leak has been fixed ....and sure enough over a period of time it cleared itself.
