I first did it using the wash bucket for lube and it worked just fine. I have since done it with the car dry using a clay lube like Prima Glide, or more recently a 50/50 mix of Prima Slick and water. Spray area once or twice clay area wipe with MF towel. I prefer this way since you can do the clay and wax while parked in the garage, so no rushing the remaining light or needing to move the car mid process.
The clay will start bouncing around when you don't have enough lube under it.
