My first Prima experience

Greetings,
First, a disclaimer. My dad owns a shop that restores cars, builds hot rods, etc. He made his name with paintwork. So I probably have a little more familiarity with some of this stuff than the basic newbie.

Second, a bit of history. I’ve been frustrated for years with car detailing. Swirl marks bug me, and I was never able to remove them by hand. You could fill them a bit, but they would come back when the fillers wash off over time. It didn’t help that I’ve had black cars. A few years back, I bought some Zaino and while it worked just fine as a sealant, I didn’t particularly care for the look (personal preference).

A couple years ago I got a Dewalt DW443 Random Orbital as a gift, but hadn’t had a chance to use it yet. I’ve also been trying to find the right “system” to use with it. After buying my ’06 CR/W MCS JCW a year ago, I’ve been surfing the NAM detailing forum quite a bit and Prima seemed like just the system I was looking for. Easy to use, effective, and they have something to cover whatever your paint needs.

After reading OctaneGuy’s write ups, instructions, etc, and seeing the work on his website, I figured I’d jump on some Prima products. I picked some up from DP a month or two ago.

I used it (and my Dewalt) for the first time a few weeks ago on my fiancé’s 1997 318i Convertible. It’s red (more orange-red than CR) and hadn’t been touched in…oh…10+ years other than some waxing.

After claying, I hit it with a white pad and Swirl. Good, but not good enough. It cut the swirls, but not the other scratches. So I went to the orange pad and swirl. In 1 pass I could about 90-95% out, a 2nd pass was used if needed to get it to about 98%. After the orange pad and swirl, I did a test/tape spot going back to white pad and swirl, and it made no difference. So the orange pad was enough to finish it as well. I also did a test with Amigo, and while it made it nice and slick, it wasn’t noticeable enough visually to warrant doing the whole car. So I went straight from orange pad/swirl to Epic.

The car looked great after buffing, but man did Epic really set it off. The whole car looks like someone dipped it in liquid red. It’s fantastic, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Sorry, I didn’t take any before or during pictures. I might take some after pics when I wash it.

The product worked great, was easy to use, clean-up was a cinch on the pads with swirl.

Next up is the Mini, and then my ’67 Chevelle (Black, I’ll be eager to try amigo on it). I’ll try to take pictures.
