I always roll down my windows (even in the rain) so that I can hear a mishap like that and hopefully avoid any more damage. Thankfully I have not encountered a situation like this, and 'knock on wood' I hope I never do!! 
I think you're right about sanding, it could make things worse, take off the roughness of the molding.
