Hi Def video on a DVD-DL and in a Blu-Ray?

Question: Have HDTV... Have high def camcorder... soon to purchase Blu-Ray player...

Can I burn Hi-Def video to a 'regular' DVD DL disk and have it play hi def in the blu-ray drive? In other words is the Hi-Def video playback tied in any way to the format of the disk?

I know the Blu_ray will obviously play standard DVD's. What I'm wondering is if my small home videos that are under 8.7 Gig and would fit on a DVD DL would play. Or if the Blu-Ray player will only look for the high def content if the media is Blu Ray...

Blu-Ray players have come down, the burners and media are still higher... I fI can get away with the above....
