Headlights & Tail Lights - Keeping them clear

I've noticed a lot of not-so-old cars are suddenly showing discoloration on their clear headlight lenses. I'm assuming my MCSC has plastic lenses as well (05 with HID) and I really want to make sure mine don't go "milky." What causes this and what can you do to protect against it? My friend has an 04 Acura MDX and already has signs of it

Additionally, I've now seen rear tail lights do something similar. My other friends 6 year old Suburban has tail lights that have the consistancy of fingernails! Is there anything that can bring them back once "they've crossed over to the bend"??? I'm really surprised at this -- I have an '87 MB Wagon with original everything and no hint of any issues.
