New owner with questions

Hi, Just bought a 2007 convertible (chili red). There is a lot of brake dust on the wheels. I previously owned a jaguar with the same issue and was able to buy shields. Is there a similar product for the mini? Also smelling the clutch, should I be worried? Thanks for your responses. KD

Welcome to NAM. MINI brakes just dust a lot like your Jag did. When they wear out (or sooner) you can switch to a lower dusting pad. There are many threads floating around discussing various aftermarket pads like Hawk HPS or Ceramics, EBC Green, etc... I have heard of wheel shields to help with this sort of thing but I have also heard that they generate a lot of heat & do not work. Can't help much on the clutch issue as I am not so mechanically inclined but I don't rememeber mine smelling when it was new but then again I have a hard time remembering what happened yesterday

That might not be the clutch you are smelling - there is a lot of protective oily substance that covers parts of the cars. Mine smelled like burning chemicals for the first few weeks. The brake dust is just something that I deal with while washing. If you want tips on how to make cleaning easier, check out the detailing forum (but watch out, those people are very enthusiastic).

Welcome to NAM!

Thanks, The smell is gone now. Good to know the brake dust is not an issue, other than cleaning :( Thanks for your replies. It's nice to have this forum as a resource. Kathleen Davis

Michelin brake dust repellant does a respectable job of keeping the dust off the wheels.FWIW
