If this is the same sound I'm thinking of, there is a thread dedicated to it at min2.com. The noise described there is likened to the sound of a plastic ruler vibrating on the end of a table. Is that description similar to the sound you're hearing? I've also heard it on my R56 MC. But posters at mini2 haven't been able to identify what it is...or even where it's coming from. It's an intermittent sound for me when going over bumps or potholes. Sorry, I'm not much help, but I just wanted you to know that it seems to be a somewhat widespread issue.

That's EXACTLY what it sounds like!!! It's comforting to know I'm not the only one hearing this...

If you are hearing the sound of a ruler vibrating, the most likely source is heat shielding along the exhaust. It is a resonance rather than an impact vibration, although the resonance may be initiated by an impact.
