New Mini Owner - NH

Hey guys, brand new Mini owner here. I've browsed through here many times while looking for a Mini, figured now that I own one I'd make an account and make some new friends.

About my Mini. She's a laser blue r56. '09 S with 59xxx miles on her. Went down to the dealer to test drive, signed papers after, and am now waiting on the dealer to deliver. (She needed some rear brake work, which the dealer is having done at no cost to me. And well, MA doesn't issue temp plates, so logistically, I'd have no way to drive her back home.) Hopefully she'll be here Tuesday, it's a stretch, but realistically I'd be taking delivery of her on Friday. Which means I have about a week to wait.

About me. My name's Ian. 22 years old. Born, raised, and currently living in NH. I love hardcore/metal music. I go to a lot of shows (music) down in the greater Boston area. Also a huge fan of Minis since my friend in college had me drive his on a beer run one winter night. Overall I'm pretty laid back and easy to talk to, so yeah, let's be friends.

Welcome!!
Yeah...buying a car in Massachusetts is a pain...done it twice....
Gotta sign the papers....then carry the documents back to NH, get the plates, go back get the carput the plates on, then you have 10 days to get it inspected....but sure beats paying mass sales tax just to get temp plates to drive it 10 miles to NH!!
Some dealers will "deliver" the car to NH for a fee...but Why pay extra $$$ IMO.

Luckily, since she needed some rear brake work done, they said that they'd deliver and take my trade in on delivery, thus giving their delivery guy a way back down, and waiving any delivery fees. Which is kinda cool, because yeah, that would have had to suck to go drive back down again (I honestly hate driving in MA with a passion.)

It also gives me a few days to run over to my insurance agent and insure it before it arrives, as well as get everything that's in my car, out of it.

I was planning on it. I'm also going up to Wolfsgart with some of my hardcore VW fanatic friends. Which, from what I'm told there aren't usually a lot of Minis. We should all try to change that

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Hopefully the dealer is delivering my Mini tomorrow, since one of the guys asked if I'd be free all day and said tomorrow would probably work out.

Needless to say, I'm stoked.

Congratulations on the Mini. I got mine in Peabody, MA. I'm finally getting to use it after three years of ownership. My son was the driver. He's moved away so it's mine at last. I'm down on Plum Island in Newbury, MA.

Hey! proud new owner of a 2010 MCS convertible! Located on the border of MA/NH! Anybody know any reputable shops? I'm guessing I'll need one

Welcome to NAM! Would love to see photos of this new beauty. I'm a big fan of hard core rock, alt rock. My list varies from blessthefall to classics like Collective Soul, haha! If you ever are feeling venturous with your new Mini and want to perform some DIY work, our tech articles should be of some assistance. Let us know if you have any questions.

So I do plan on doing some DIY work, and was wondering, what size wrenches and sockets am I going to need? I know I'm going to need a 27mm and an 8mm socket for oil changes, but when it comes time to doing other things, what are some of the other sizes I'd need to have handy?

have a good metric set, and a good torx set, preety much all youll need. with the 2nd gen, youll need a super thin wall 14mm 12 point socket for the spark plugs. normal thin wall isn't thin enough.....

Common metric open wrench set and a common metric socket set is what I would invest in for future DIY sets. Some torx screws are on it so maybe a 1/4 drive torx set. You can take a look at our basic maintenance tech articles that name tools directly in the article itself as to what tools are needed for each job. We did just get a R56 JCW in ourselves and will be tearing into the vehicle soon so that we can get more DIY articles. If you're wanting us to do a specific DIY project for you, please let us know and I will put it on the list to do!

Get the ES240947 for the oil filter hosuing.

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/ES240947/

And ES2561145 14mm for future spark plug changes : " 14mm 12-point socket is specially designed to fit into narrow spark plug tubes "

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/ES2561145/

And sets of metric sockets and metric wrenches helps. Basic Torx screw drivers and normal screwdriver .
