Don't go through the menus, as they're not very helpful ("Measure" doesn't set the camera up to measure, etc.).
Press the WB button and turn the thumb dial until "Pre" is shown on the top panel. Release all buttons. Then, press and hold the WB button for a few seconds. "Pre" will flash. Take a photo of a gray card, preferably with autoexposure in the lighting environment you aim to balance for. Then "Gd"/"good" will be displayed if it worked, or "NoGd" if not.
The D70 manual used to have this info on page 53.
Gray cards are available for relatively cheap $$$ at Calumet or B&H.
