Mountain Madness Run
DATE: | Saturday May 1st, 2004 |
TIME: | 9:00 AM (Departure at 9:15 AM) |
LOCATION: | Ingles in Robbinsville |
We will meet at Ingles in Robbinsville at 9:00 AM
sharp. Depart at 9:15 AM and head out to the Cherahala Skyway.
We will stop at the highest point on the Skyway for pictures. At an altitude of over 5000 ft.
you can see forever.
The next stop for pictures will be in Tennessee about 10 miles from
Tellico. This area has a great view with a lake and streams. This will also be a great stop because it has rest rooms.
Next will be Tellico Plains if anyone sees something they want to look at we will
check it out. At Tellico we will turn left onto Hwy 68. This road has a wide
assortment of curves and is one of my favorites.
Next small town will be Ducktown, Tennessee. It used to be pretty busy little place in the old days before
the copper mines closed. Bootleggers and fast cars were common in this
area. Now it is mostly a place for rafters to come. From Ducktown to
Cooperhill it used to be dead...no trees, no grass, no nothing. The smog from the
copper company killed everything for miles. People lived right in the middle
of this crap and a lot of them lived short lives. Now the hills are green
again and it looks great.
Well from there we take Hwy 60 to Morganton, Georgia and if you think we have seen some small
towns they just keep getting smaller.
We will continue by heading south to Suches on 60. It a smooth blacktop with curves that are
banked like a race track. Not to many off chamber curves. You can really have
some fun here. At Suches the only thing there is the T.W.O. and Dales Country
Store. We will stop for gas and rest rooms.
Next we will take Hwy 180 or some call it Wolfpen Gap. It is 12 miles of the curviest roads on earth. Great
fun.
At the end of 180 we will turn left onto 129 go to Pappy's Riverside
Restaurant for lunch. After lunch we will backtrack to 180 and head north
towards Hiawassee. Along the way we will stop at Brasstown Bald...the highest point in
Georgia.
After Hiawassee it is onto Franklin N.C. where we will take Wayah
road. This place will really test your skills. It is 28 miles and it has some
great curves.
Of course from there it is back to Robbinsville on Hwy 19 and
129. We will stop rest and take pictures anytime anyone wants. Speed will be
decided by the vehicles behind me. If I am pushed it will be faster if I
start getting to far ahead it will be slower. I mostly want to have a safe
and pleasant time with some hauling butt.
